Surreal escapism in Banff, Canada

Surreal escapism in Banff, Canada

17 July 2019

Banff, a small town within Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada, is somewhat cut adrift within Alberta’s Rockies after a road trip down the Trans-Canada Highway.

Sitting to the west of Calgary and around 5,000 ft above sea level, Banff boasts the acclaim of being a community with the second highest elevation in Alberta, second only to Lake Louise.

Banff is a resort town and one of Canada’s most popular tourist destinations yet, despite that, the location offers a sense of surreal escapism. Its mountainous surroundings make it a popular destination for outdoor sports while the hot springs offer that moment of relaxation in what can only be described as a dreamlike setting.

The national park itself is Canada’s oldest and was established in 1885. Located in the Rocky Mountains, an area that needs very little introduction, its subarctic climate and dense forestry combine almost spiritually with the glacial lakes, ruthless nature and, at times, pure silence.
